CNC Spindle Kit Buying Guide: What's in the Box, and What You Actually Need
A spindle kit is more than the motor hanging off your Z-axis. A complete kit bundles four things that must match: the spindle motor, the VFD (variable-frequency drive) that runs it, the ER collet system that holds your bits, and a cooling method — air or water. Buy them mismatched and you get a spindle that trips its VFD, overheats mid-job, or runs at the wrong speed. Step 1 — Match power to the job, not to the biggest number

Step 2 — ER11 or ER20: collet range decides your bits
The ER collet number is the size of the collet family, not the bit size: ER11 covers smaller shanks (down to 1/8 in / 3.175 mm bits and below, up to roughly 7 mm), while ER20 holds the larger range up to about 13 mm — including 1/4 in (6.35 mm) shanks with room to spare. Rule of thumb: engraving and fine work with small bits → ER11; routing with standard 1/4 in or 6–10 mm bits → ER20. Step 3 — Air-cooled or water-cooled: it is a workflow choice

Step 4 — Voltage and VFD: the two numbers people get wrong
First, the input voltage: 220 V single-phase for most of the world, 110 V for North America — the VFD must match your mains. Several 1.5 kW and 2.2 kW kits are available in both 110 V and 220 V versions, so confirm your wall voltage before ordering.
Second, the VFD rating: it should be at least equal to the spindle power. Some kits deliberately pair a slightly larger VFD (for example a 1.5 kW VFD running a 0.8 kW spindle) for headroom — that is fine and normal. What is not fine is a spindle bigger than its VFD: the drive trips under load.
